Firstly a disclaimer: this was a team cake.
My equally cake-keen cousin in London was making her daughter’s first birthday cake and I pitched in. The little one is now 4 (she had a fabulous Olympics cake!) so I am stretching my memory here. I do remember that we used an unhealthy amount of eggs and butter and the cake was nearly attacked by slugs when we took it outside to try to set the buttercream. The bug was just delightful with funny seductive eyelashes. The kids poked and prodded the cake until it was cut. The delight of a dozen kids fawning of the cake made it so worth the effort.
